This month, we held face-to-face driver meetings for our entire Ontario fleet. These quick-fire sessions have been all about us standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our drivers, understanding their needs and concerns, and developing stronger interpersonal relationships. But most importantly, we’ve been brainstorming how we can work together to shape a better future for the entire Contrans Flatbed family.

Having these progress pit-stops has also given us a fabulous opportunity to tell our crew what we’re up to and offer access to invaluable tools that’ll help keep them on top of their game out on the road.

These are the kinds of things that have been coming up in recent meetings:

• Fuel economy: We’re big on meeting customer demand for increased sustainability performance (and so are our drivers). We’ve been talking about how we can improve fuel efficiency even more. This means better performance, lower operating costs and a reduction in harmful emissions. Win-win.
• PeopleNet: Our PeopleNet guru, Scott Howarth had the opportunity to introduce some new trials to our drivers as well as discuss other important peoplenet programs and initiatives. This also acted as a learning tool to show our drivers can improve their idol time and mpg performance.
• Industry Regulations and Changes<: Our drivers like to be on the up-and-up of everything that’s going on in the trucking industry. We’ve been chatting about recent advancements and new tools that are available to help them succeed in their careers, big-time.
• Distracted Driving: Safety is kind of our middle name. If our drivers don’t have their full attention on the road, they’re putting themselves and others at risk. We’ve been sharing a wealth of tips and tricks that’ll help our drivers stay alert and focused at all times to prevent unnecessary accidents.
• Company News: Anyone around here will tell you that our drivers are the lifeblood of our crew. It’s kind of a big deal that they know everything that we’re up to. Having regular meetings has given us the perfect chance to keep them in the loop.
• Divisional Issues: The strength and efficiency of our individual divisions contributes to our overall success as a group. These meetings provided us with an opportunity to discuss any of the challenges we’re facing in each division to ensure we can keep operating at full speed, no matter what.

These meetings have really been bringing us all together and enforcing our team-centric mentality. We’re oh-so appreciative of all the insider feedback, big ideas and off-road support our drivers have been contributing at these meetings. We couldn’t do it without you guys!

On April 6th, we invited all you mega-passionate drivers and owner operators out there to come hang out with us for our career day at Marshall’s Truck and Trailer in Hamilton, Ontario. We’re happy to announce that the event was a resounding success and we had a fantastic turnout! (And way more fun than anyone anticipated.)

So many newly licensed and experienced drivers came out, schmoozed, made new friends and proved to us that they’re absolutely ready to put their careers into high gear.

We kicked off the day with a scrumptious breakfast for all our attendees. (Hey, we told you that you should’ve come.) Chatting over some good grub was the perfect way to get to know one another, establish some exciting new connections and get to know what qualified candidates were really looking for in an employer.

We got a chance to hear about what matters most to you—like a team-focused approach, loads of professional growth and development initiatives, specialized training, and supportive workplace accommodations to cover all your big vocational goals and family needs. Non-profit initiatives have long been baked into The Contrans Flatbed Group business model and we’ve always seen community outreach as one of the most important ingredients to our company’s success. Now we’ve developed a new strategy that will allow us to make a bigger, bolder impact in the lives of others.

Beginning in 2012, we launched a new charity initiative that has helped us make a difference with the non-profit groups that have meant the most to our employees. Since then, we’ve successfully tapped into our team’s hearts and asked them to fess up about what charities matter to them most, deep down—the ones they’d feel truly thrilled about us supporting.

After holding a vote to determine which charity group is getting the most love from the Contrans Flatbed Group team, we’ve tallied the numbers and sent our special donations to the lucky winners. The best part of this process is that it gives our employees a say in what initiatives we support. In turn, we can make a larger contribution that promises even more positive change while feeling confident that we’ve best served the interests of our valued crew.

This year, we’re thrilled to announce that our winner was the McMaster Children’s Hospital which has continued to provide leading-edge healthcare to many of our employees’ children. Since this facility services both our Hagersville and Mississauga employees, 2/3 of our contribution will be made to McMaster.

Of course, we want our North Bay employees to be just as involved as the rest of our crew. That’s why the remainder of our donation will be made to the North Bay Regional Health Center for their Women and Children Center. This hospital has been used by a number of Contrans Flatbed Group families and will continue to support those we know as they struggle to help their children recover from illness.

To present the cheques to these two unique locations, we thought it would be fun to randomly draw names of employees who would be responsible for representing the company and visiting these facilities. “This is just another way we’re able to involve our employees in the process and feel a sense of pride in our company’s ability to make a difference to a group they care so much about,” says Kara Kett, our Driver Recruitment Officer.

We’re fiercely committed to supporting these community initiatives by implementing action and taking real social responsibility. Because our employees are such an important part of everything we do, we couldn’t be prouder to have them adopting this role in our decision-making process.

On April 30, 2012, a truck driver transporting a load of granular cement attempted to negotiate the ramp to the westbound lanes of the QEW at Royal Windsor Drive and lost control of his vehicle. The truck and trailer rolled, trapping the driver inside. Our own Stephen Lill happened to be traveling behind this truck driver and witnessed the accident firsthand.

Recognizing a fellow transport driver in need, Stephen quickly pulled over without a second’s hesitation and attended the scene, crawling into the cab and sitting with the injured driver until help arrived.

Emergency personnel arrived and eventually freed the driver who was then flown to Hamilton with life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, he made a full recovery, thanks in part to Stephen’s courageous efforts.

We are oh-so proud to be congratulating Stephen Lill for winning the inaugural Castrol Courage to Go Far Driver of the Year Award, although it comes as no surprise to us and is certainly well-deserved. This honour was created in partnership with Castol Heavy Duty Lubricants and is bestowed upon a Contrans Flatbed Group Driver or Owner Operator who goes above and beyond the call of duty—we think Stephen’s heroic story more than covers it.

Stephen was nominated by his co-workers for being super helpful, incredibly capable and a fearless difference-maker. His compassion for this driver whom he did not know is undoubtedly astounding, admirable and inspirational.

Stephen has been employed with Contrans Flatbed Group and been a local driver for our Mississauga Multi Board dating back to August 17, 2011. From everyone within our organization, we would like to thank Stephen for embodying the courage that each of us aspires to every day. He has made us incredibly proud and we are thrilled to have had this opportunity to spotlight his extraordinary act of heroism.

What this means for our drivers:

Many of you make regular trips through Windsor and some of you even call it home, but we don’t often get the opportunity to chat with you face-to-face at the yard. We think that’s a shame. After all, we want to make sure you feel like a true part of our growing team and that you’ve got the right support to thrive within the company.

That’s where Grayson, driver relations, comes in. He’s super friendly (pinky swear) and will be able to answer your questions or navigate any issues you may be having. In other words, he’s on board to keep you smiley-faced, motivated and rollin’ in the right direction.

What this means for our customers:

Grayson will also be responsible for building customer relationships in the Windsor region, as well as finding new freight and engaging in lucrative networking opportunities. More importantly, our new satellite office will give our Windsor area customers a place to visit and a nearby body to connect with should they run into any hairy issues.

“We’re hoping that this new office will create opportunity further down the 401 corridor for us to help us to organically grow and develop as a company,” says Kara Kett, our Driver Recruiter. “It also allows us the opportunity to tap into the Windsor market for drivers with the resources to support them properly and allow for their success both with their careers and their longevity with our company”.

We do a great deal of business with the Royal Group here in Woodbridge, Ontario, and were thrilled to have a chance to hang out at their business base to see where all the magic happens. We sent our own dream team—Steven Brookshaw, our Vice President of Flatbed and Peter Maillet, our Director of Sales.

They saw first-hand how The Royal Group’s vertical integration structure has got them rolling out innovative new products to the marketplace on a regular basis. Their parent company, Georgia Gulf Corporation, ensures that they have a continuous supply of high quality raw materials with which to locally manufacture high quality building supplies.

This trip was meant to build on foundations that have already been laid, but also to open the doors of opportunity for Contrans to participate in a similar business in Abbotsford as we manage here in Woodbridge.

There is an exciting prospective partnership with The Royal Group to be the in-house carrier at their western facilities. This would include supplying the transportation for their raw material input, finished good for local distribution, and perhaps some intermodal work for their longer haul distribution centers in Calgary and Winnipeg.

Because of the physical layout of the operation, there are some transfer issues that present some challenges (but nothing we can’t handle!). We believe that we may be able to increase the efficiency of the workflow, and at the same time, provide The Royal Group’s valued team with a safer working environment.

We’ll be ramping up talks with The Royal Group in the spring again with the aim to engineer a strategic plan that will help them meet their business objectives and optimize their western operations.

For now, Steven and Peter would like to send out a huge thank you to the team at The Royal Group for providing them with a little fun on the job, participating in some awesome brainstorming sessions and giving them an educational behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities. We can’t wait to get things rolling with you!
